I've heard a few people having great results with EVPs with a EMF pump in the background.

Found this on paranormal news very interesting but no desire to go investigate.
http://naturalplane.blogspot.com/2009/12...oices.html

timesonline - The Marines found the bone as they scraped a shallow trench. Long, dry and unmistakably once part of a human leg, it was followed by others. They reburied most of them but also found bodies. Three of the graves were close together; in another was a skeleton still wearing a pair of glasses. The Marines covered the grave and told their successors to stay away from it.

Observation Point Rock sits a few hundred metres south east of Patrol Base Hassan Abad, where a company from 2/8 Marines has been stationed for the past seven months. It is a lonely and exposed outpost 20 metres (65ft) above the surrounding landscape, which has been in Nato hands since it was captured from the Taleban in 2008.

Groups of Marines are posted to guard it, usually for a couple of months at a time, and “the Rock” has acquired a peculiar reputation. American troops widely refer to it as “the haunted Observation Point”.

It is hard to say how much the 100F (38C) heat, round-the-clock guard shifts and months spent living in trenches and peering out of sandbagged firing points have gilded the legend of OP Rock. The only break from the tedium, apart from dog-eared magazines and an improvised gym, has been small-arms or rocket-propelled grenade attacks from the Taleban, usually on a Sunday morning.

But as Sergeant Josh Brown, 22, briefed his successor when a detachment of men from Golf Company was swapped for an incoming contingent from Fox Company, he warned of the strange atmosphere and inexplicable phenomena that plagued OP Rock. “The local people say this is a cursed place,” he said. “You will definitely see weird-ass lights up here at night.”

Others in the outgoing unit had reported odd sounds. “It is weird what you hear and don’t hear around here,” he added.

Each successive detachment that guards the Rock appears to add its own layer to the legend, which has spread through the Marine units pushing into southern Helmand.

There is talk of members of the Taleban entombed in caves below; the bodies buried on the summit are identified confidently as dead Russian soldiers from the ill-fated Soviet invasion.

Corporal Jacob Lima’s story is the latest addition. One night he was woken by the sound of screaming. It was Corporal Zolik, a Marine who has since been moved to a unit farther south. “He was yelling and begging me to go up to the firing point he was guarding,” Corporal Lima, 22, told the men taking over from him. “When I got there he said that he was sitting there when he heard a voice whisper something in his ear. He said it sounded like Russian. He begged me to stay in there with him till he was relieved from guard duty. After that he really didn’t like standing post up there.”

The Marines’ predecessors, a unit of Welsh Guards, also produced tales of the unexpected. “The Brits claimed to see weird things, hear noises,” Corporal Lima said. “Lots of them said it’s creepy at night, especially from midnight till 4am. You see a lot of unexplained lights through night-vision goggles.”

Its elevation has clearly made the Rock a natural defensive position for centuries. It is not a rock, though it resembles one. Medieval arrow slits and the remains of fortified turrets on its eastern flank show that this was once a large mud fort that collapsed in on itself and was probably built upon in turn. The locals say that it dates back to Alexander the Great, and another similar structure is visible in the distance to the south, part of a supposed line of such forts built at some point in Afghanistan’s history of invasion and war.

When US Marines seized the post last summer they dropped a 2,000lb (900kg) bomb on one side, collapsing part of the structure on to what its current occupants claim was a cave where Taleban fighters were sheltering.

“This place really sucks,” said Lance Corporal Austin Hoyt, 20, putting his pack on to return to the main base. “The Afghans say it’s haunted. Stick a shovel in anywhere and you’ll find bones and bits of pottery. This place should be in National Geographic — in the front there are weird-looking windows for shooting arrows. You know, they say the Russians up here were executed by the Mujahidin.”

He looked meaningfully at his successors and prepared to leave.

It's popular opinion that residual hauntings don't involve spirits and are recordings of past events being played over and over? It certainly appears that way.

But, why is that I've never heard of a person witnessing themselves as the residual playback? Why are there not stories of people saying “yeah, I grew up in this house and I sometimes see myself as a child playing on the stairs” or “I suffered a very traumatic event in that room a few years back and I sometimes hear myself calling for help in the middle of the night".

Are these stories out there and I’m just not seeing them?

stuff - Wellington film-maker Peter Jackson says he saw a real ghost once.

In London for the premiere of The Lovely Bones - a film he has directed from Alice Sebold's story in which a murdered teenage girl gives her viewpoint from heaven - Jackson said he did not know what a real soul was like.

But he told Britain's Channel 4 TV that while he could not swear the spirit in the movie was 100 percent accurate, he had seen a real ghost.

"It was genuine," said Jackson, who made a 1996 ghost movie, The Frighteners - co-written with his wife Fran Walsh - starring Michael J Fox.

His sighting was in an apartment he and his wife had in Wellington's Courtney Place opposite the St James Theatre, when they first met 20 years ago.

"I woke up one morning and there was a figure in the room, she was very scary, she had a screaming face, very accusatory, she was a lady about 50 years old," Jackson said.

"It was terrifying actually, a very scary image and she was at the end of the bed and she glided across the room and disappeared into the wall.

"I sat in bed and thought, have I really seen that?" said Jackson.

"Then Fran came in. I told her about it and the first thing she said was: 'was it the woman with the screaming face?"' he said.

"Fran had seen the same woman in the same room about two years before."

Jackson said that when the St James Theatre was being restored a few years ago, people talked about the legend of the woman who committed suicide after being booed off the stage after a bad show in vaudeville days.

"They say she manifests herself in the theatre with a screaming face. Sometimes she's seen - the same ghost. She needs to learn to smile a little."

I see a lot of photos of so called orbs these days. It's funny how I almost never hear stories of people actually seeing them with their own eyes. It's always energy that supposedly shows up on film but isn’t seen by those present.
One of the most prominent paranormal events that happened when I was a child was an “orb” that came to my room at night and would talk with me. Well… it didn’t really speak; I can only say what my interpretation was of what it wanted. I would guess it occurred many nights until I was maybe 7 or 8. It seemed to be solid, about the size of quarter with a black dot in the middle. It hovered near my closet door and would come toward to me and back away as I whispered to it. My impression was that it was unhappy, demanding really, and wanted to know what I and the rest of my family did when we left the house all day. If I refused to speak, or if it didn’t like the answer I gave, it would fly toward my face and I would squeeze my eyes shut and say “ok ok” and then tell it what it wanted. I can't say if I was correct in what I thought it wanted to know, it could very well have just been a childs best guess at the time.

Because of that experience I wonder if what I saw was a true orb and the others in photographs are just mistaken identity. Mostly dust. Or was what I saw something more special and rare? Has anyone else had, or heard, of a similar experience?

And yes, there were many other occurrences of the paranormal. Some say they saw an old woman in a white dress with blue flowers in the house. But I never did.

IR Light Barriers

So the nerd-fest continues. I picked up two IR light barrier kits from BG Micro. I just finished the soldering on these bad boys tonight and they seem to work great.

The concept:
Each barrier has a IR transmitter and a IR receiver. If the connection is broken a alarm will sound. The only problem is that the alarm will go away as soon as the IR connection is re-established. But if we stay in ear shot of it, it could be interesting to mark door ways, etc.

Anyway, I'll have these for the next investigation.. so a new toy.

Did anyone else see the new paranormal show on a&e tv called "Extreme Paranormal" tonite? Three guys use provoking and rituals to get responses from the spirits. I think they are more nutsy than gutsy......... but then I'm into being more respectful to the spirits even if they were prisoners. Use of the "jacobs ladder" and re-enactment was interesting. I would like to hear what anyone else thought about it. So far I like it better than paranormal state.

Jennifer Connelly, Family Move Out Of Haunted Home
Hollywood actress Jennifer Connelly was forced to move out of her Brooklyn home with husband Paul Bettany, after she was convinced that it is haunted.

'A Beautiful Mind' star grew up not far from the same New York home, and planned to raise her kids six-year-old son Stellan and 12-year-old son Kai.

But when the kids echoed Connelly’s spooky fears, she was convinced that the house was haunted and moved with Bettany to Manhattan.

"It was a little big... like a haunted mansion, a creepy house. It had that kind of feel to it and it was just wrong for us in a lot of ways,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“It felt like we were going to get child services calling us because we had this nice house and the kids were sleeping on the floor in sleeping bags because they were afraid to go sleep in their rooms, so we moved.

“We're liking (Manhattan). It's easy. it's comfortable, everyone sleeps," she added.

qctimes.com - Mike Kennedy believes there is more to life after death.

Kennedy says he's noticed objects being moved when he's alone and saw his great-grandfather after the man died. And his experience working at Skellington Manor in downtown Rock Island to set up the animatronics that are part of the new haunted house there has only solidified his belief in the otherworldly.

He's heard women's voices whispering when the only woman in the building was in the room with him. And one night as he closed up the building, he saw an image that gave him the chills and made the hair stand up on the back of his neck.

"I was walking up the stairs and an apparition walked across the top of the stairs," he said. "It was just a faded white image. It looked like somebody that was in a dress."

Kennedy said the image disappeared into what was called the Women's Parlor when the building was owned by the Masons. The room's purpose is still signified above the door.

Multiple volunteers working to set up the haunted house have reported experiences similar to Kennedy's, so Skellington Manor owners Penni and Michael Steen, who used to own Terror in the Woods in rural Scott County, hired Brenda Bonay, the lead investigator with Mercer County Paranormal Investigators organization, to check things out.

Bonay got into the business of investigating paranormal activities after growing up in what she says was a haunted house in Wapello, Iowa. The family would hear the sounds of people running up and down the stairs when everyone was in the living room, and they often would find writing on the walls, even after her parents took all the crayons away from the children.

The first thing Bonay does on any case is to try to provide a plausible explanation for any seemingly ghostly activities. She's able to successfully debunk about 85 percent of the cases she receives, but she was not able to do so at Skellington Manor. Investigators say they witnessed a door opening by itself, picked up unexplained readings on an electromagnetic field detector and recorded what is known as electronic voice phenomenon, or voices that can't be heard with the ear but are picked up by recording devices.

Bonay asked questions such as: "Is anybody here that would like to say something?" and "Are you a man? Are you a woman?"

The recording picked up sounds of male and female voices, and, in one instance, she was able to make out the phrase, "Who's there?"

Bonay believes the building truly is haunted and that visitors to Terror at Skellington Manor just might experience a real ghost as they make their way through the haunted house filled with actors, props and spooky images.

"There's a very good chance, if they keep their eyes and ears open and use all five of their senses - their eyes, their smell, their touch, just an overall feeling, goosebumps - they're likely to experience something paranormal," said Bonay, who added that she has never felt threatened on her multiple visits to the building.

As for Kennedy, his experiences at Skellington Manor haven't scared him off.

"It's kind of neat to have a 'haunted house' in a real haunted place," he said. "So hopefully we don't disturb them too much, and if we do, hopefully they'll play with us."
